I have several species of turtles and tortoises, hermit crabs, fancy goldfish/pond comets, unusual tropical fish, bichirs, dwarf gouramis, violet (dragon) gobies, hissing cockroaches, bettas and bearded dragons, most coming from previous owners who no longer wanted to deal with the specific needs of reptiles such as proper lighting/heating, diet, cleanliness, disease prevention, etc. The animals are evaluated for health, given treatment if needed, fed healthy appropriate foods and exposed to fresh air and sunlight in outdoor set ups, then placed in the care of interested, experienced homes. I'm the adoption and educational program director for GCTTS and give public education programs at libraries, parks and schools on care and conservation of turtles and tortoises.
I'm a ardent advocate of keeping turtles and tortoises outdoors when weather permits along with selecting native species or those most appropriate for ones outdoor environment, thus I'm against their being kept as tropical fish indoors under artificial lighting and undersized tanks. It's selfish and inhumane to contain turtles/tortoises with particular environmental needs in our homes with the interest of our convenience and our entertainment over the animals well-being. Why spend hundreds in pet supplies for an artificial environment and subsequent vet care when the ideal set up lies several feet away... outdoors. Direct sun exposure along with a healthy diet is the most used, highly effective treatment of many reptile illnesses by experienced rescues and rehabiliators for good reason.
